Imagine harnessing the raw power of a Formula 1 engine in a road-legal vehicle. This is no longer a fantasy as Mercedes-Benz breaks new ground with the unveiling of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG One, a hypercar that embodies technical prowess, innovation, and performance in a breathtakingly luxurious package.
After five and a half years of anticipation, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG One makes a thrilling debut. Promising to push the boundaries of what’s possible, the German automaker successfully integrates a Formula 1 powertrain into a road-legal car, marking a significant milestone in automotive engineering.
At the heart of the AMG One lies its 1.6-litre V6 engine derived from Formula 1 technology. Capable of spinning to an impressive 11,000 rpm, this engine produces 566 horsepower on its own and still meets Euro 6 emission standards. The engine is a marvel of modern technology, featuring double overhead camshafts, air spring valves, direct injection, and a complex exhaust gas cleaning system.
But the V6 engine isn’t the entire story. The AMG One also utilizes four electric motors, bringing its combined horsepower to an awe-inspiring 1,049. Two of these motors are located at the front wheels, generating a combined 322 horsepower. The third motor is installed with the gasoline engine, contributing another 161 horsepower to the mix, while the fourth motor, tied to the turbocharger, adds an extra 121 horsepower. This hybrid system not only provides unparalleled power but also adds the versatility of all-wheel drive.
To power this advanced system, the AMG One is equipped with lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 8.4 kWh. Despite not carrying as many batteries as a pure EV, Mercedes engineers have ensured optimal performance by incorporating a complex liquid cooling system to keep the batteries at their ideal operating temperature.
As a result, the AMG One boasts staggering performance figures. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and can reach a speed of 200 km/h in a mere 7.0 seconds. The top speed is an impressive regulated 352 km/h. Even with all this power, the AMG One can travel 11.2 miles on electric power alone.
The AMG One doesn’t compromise on handling either. It features a monocoque chassis with push-rod suspension designed for ultimate performance. The vehicle has various drive modes that adjust the suspension for comfort, sport, or sport+, depending on the driver’s preference. The active aerodynamics, including adjustable spoilers and ventilation slots, enhance downforce and stability at high speeds.
The AMG One’s interior continues the F1-inspired theme with a rectangular steering wheel, sculptured seats, and two 10-inch digital screens. Despite the race car influence, it retains luxurious features like snazzy climate control vents, speaker grilles, and power windows integrated into the carbon fibre and leather surroundings. The exterior is just as impressive, sporting special ten-spoke wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 M01 tires developed specifically for the hypercar.
Despite its $2 million price tag, all 275 units of the AMG One have already been spoken for, indicating the strong demand for this extraordinary vehicle.
